She is dedicated to ensuring Houston area kids have access to engaging reading material at home. Books Between Kids strives to maintain a Board of Directors with diverse experiences, perspectives, and skills. The Board of Directors is charged with planning and monitoring programs and services, representing us to the public and providing financial and legal/ethical oversight.
President: Kate Robertson is a lifelong learner and retired educator with 30 years of experience in teaching and educational leadership. She volunteers with various community organizations including HITS Theatre and the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Kate and her husband have one son who is a student at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Vice-President: Ann Guerra has been a Montessori teacher for over 24 years. She is an active member of the PTO at her daughter’s school.
Secretary: Susan Ellerbe is retired from The Minute Maid Company/The Coca-Cola Company after 22 years in sales, marketing, IT and training. She is currently involved in several non-profit organizations. Susan and her husband David have one teenage son.
Treasurer: Sandra Ahlhorn is a Co-Founder of Books Between Kids. Sandra is an active volunteer in her child’s school and is Co-Owner of Speedy Printing – W. Alabama.
Board Member: Amy Barnes is a Co-Founder of Books Between Kids. Amy is a lifelong bibliophile and an active community volunteer. She and her husband have three children.
Board Member: Christie Cardon is a commercial litigator and pro bono coordinator for her law firm. She and her husband have two young boys and are active members of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and other charitable organizations for which they both serve as board members. The whole family shares a love of books.
Board Member: Sarah Cooper is a lawyer, parent of a college and middle school student, volunteer tutor, librarian and lifelong reader; she is originally from New York City and has lived in Houston for over 20 years.
Board Member: Emily Duncan works in private practice as a reading specialist. She is involved in many educational organizations in Houston including The Rise School of Houston and the Houston Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.
Board Member: Kelsey Morris is a senior analyst at Macquarie Bank. As an avid reader and active theatergoer, she believes in the power of storytelling to expand horizons.
Board Member: Cody Santos and his husband have lived in Houston for the past 13 years. He is an accountant and has nearly 20 years of internal audit/accounting experience. Growing up in rural Texas, he firmly believes the power of books can make an impact on the lives of children. Some of his favorite authors include C.S. Lewis, Stephen Ambrose, and Erik Larson.
Board Member: Sharleen Walkoviak is co-owner of Covenant Technology Services. She believes education and mentoring is the key to changing our society, one child at a time. She actively supports many education-centric organizations, including the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, where she serves as a Lifetime Vice President.
